Potential Chamomile Side Effects, Cautions, and Contraindications

Are there any possible chamomile side effects, risks, or contraindications to be aware of? Even though chamomile tea is a powerhouse herbal tea, chock-full of physical, emotional, and mental health benefits, this is still an important question to ask.

The answer is... Yes. Before you brew yourself a cup of chamomile tea, be sure to read over these cautions and possible side effects of chamomile herbal tea.

General Cautions for Chamomile Side Effects

We love herbs and herbal teas not only for their delicious taste, but also for the many ways they help and heal us.

However, when you add a new herbal tea (such as chamomile) to your tea cupboard - say, to help you sleep better or to help manage a really stressful week - it's best to pay a visit to your healthcare provider and discuss this new herbal tea with her first.

With chamomile tea, this is especially important if you are allergic to any plant in the Asteraceae (Compositae) family, such as ragweed, echinacea, dandelions, arnica, sunflowers, chrysanthemums, feverfew, calendula, or asters, as this could mean you may also react to chamomile.

If you do have an allergy to this plant family, drinking chamomile tea could potentially lead to respiratory problems, skin reactions, or even more severe allergic responses (such as anaphylactic shock), so approach with caution!

Topical use of chamomile tea may also pose risks, as well, with an allergy to chamomile - for example, use of chamomile tea as an eye wash could possibly lead to allergic conjunctivitis (also known as 'pink eye').

Chamomile Side Effects

Please check with your healthcare provider before drinking chamomile tea if you have asthma, as this herbal tisane has been known to aggravate asthma.

If you're a regular chamomile tea drinker and you have a medical or dental surgery coming up, ask your healthcare professional if this tea (which has blood-thinning properties) should be eliminated from your diet.

Because chamomile tea has mild sedative effects and may cause drowsiness, please do not drink (chamomile tea) and drive!

And, as with any new herbal tea, it's best to introduce chamomile tisane to your diet slowly! Drinking high amounts of strong chamomile tea in a short period of time may cause nausea or even vomiting, so please take your time getting to know chamomile tea and watch for chamomile side effects, if this lovely, fragrant tea is new to you.

We LOVE Chamomile Tea! :)

Over one million cups of chamomile tea are consumed around the world each day!

Is Chamomile Tea good for Moms and Tots?

Chamomile is known as a uterine stimulant and, as such, may increase the risk of miscarriage. So, if you are planning to fall pregnant or are already expecting a little one, please avoid chamomile tea (either as a beverage or topically) altogether until you've checked with your healthcare provider.

Chamomile tea is well-known for relieving baby's colic, croup, and diaper rash, but please be sure to consult your healthcare professional before giving chamomile tea to or using it topically for your baby. And little is known about the effects of drinking chamomile tea while breastfeeding, so it's best to ask your healthcare provider about this first, as well.

Chamomile Side Effects

Can Chamomile Tea be combined with Other Herbal Remedies or Medications?

Because chamomile tea does have gentle sedative effects, it may interact with other prescribed, over-the-counter, or herbal sedatives.

The same holds true for prescription, over-the-counter, or herbal blood thinners. Chamomile's blood-thinning properties may increase the effects of other medications or remedies that also thin the blood, such as anti-platelets (like aspirin) or anticoagulants (like warfarin).

Chamomile is also known to lower blood sugar levels. As such, it may interact with diabetic medications, so, if you are being treated for diabetes, please limit your intake of chamomile tea until you've spoken with your healthcare provider about whether this herbal tisane is a good fit for you.

Chamomile tea may affect other prescribed medications, as well. If you are taking any prescription meds at all (including birth control pills), be sure to have a discussion with your healthcare professional about how this tea may affect or interact with your medication.

Herbs have such a good reputation around the world for health and healing that we naturally assume all herbs are healthy and beneficial. However, if you are planning to add chamomile tea to your daily routine, a good general rule is to check with your healthcare professional first about any possible chamomile side effects, risks, or concerns for you in consuming this tea.
