Rooibos Tea for Babies

Rooibos tea for babies is becoming a popular choice for parents around the world as awareness of Rooibos tea benefits grows.

A favorite choice in South Africa, Rooibos is well known for soothing colic, tummy troubles, and food allergies and for encouraging untroubled sleep for babies. This South African red tea is nutritious, naturally sweet, and a healthy supplementary beverage for infants.

If you've been wondering about Rooibos tea for infants or children, here are some of the health benefits this aromatic herbal tea may provide for your little one.

  • Rooibos tea is best known for helping baby's digestion in so many ways - this tea will relieve colic, stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.
  • As an herbal tea, Rooibos tea is naturally caffeine free, so it has none of the side effects typically associated with caffeine and is a safe choice for infants and tots.
  • Rooibos tea is naturally high in Vitamin C and other antioxidants. Rooibos antioxidants help the body fight free radicals and prevent disease.
  • Rooibos tea is fruity, fragrant, and delicious! It's also naturally sweet, so it doesn't need honey or another sweetener added (helping you keep extra sugar and other sweeteners out of baby's diet).

  • Rooibos tea is chock full of healthy, essential minerals. It supplements your little one's daily intake of manganese, calcium, and fluoride (good for growing strong bones and teeth). Rooibos is also a good source of magnesium (essential for overall good health and helps baby sleep), zinc (important for a healthy immune system), and potassium (which supports healthy functioning of the body's vital organs). And Rooibos contains iron, which carries oxygen to our blood cells, as well.
  • Rooibos tea's anti-inflammatory qualities can provide topical benefits, too. Rooibos applied directly to the skin can soothe and relieve skin irritations such as diaper rash, sunburn, itchiness, or eczema.
  • Rooibos tea is low in tannins (high levels of tannins may inhibit digestion and interfere with your baby's ability to absorb iron).

  • Rooibos tea is very hydrating for your child, and it provides a change from milk or water and isn't as sweet or acidic as fruit juice.

Of course, Rooibos tea shouldn't replace baby's normal breastfeeding or bottle. Caffeine free, low in tannins, and full of health benefits, Rooibos tea for babies is a nutritional, soothing, delicious supplementary beverage.

Just be sure to check with your healthcare provider before giving Rooibos tea to your little one to be sure it's a safe choice for your baby.

A modern-day 'discovery' of the goodness of Rooibos tea

In 1968, the benefits of Rooibos tea for babies came to the attention of Dr. Annique Theron when she added warm Rooibos tea to her crying baby's bottle to warm the bottle quickly. When her baby stopped fussing immediately, Dr. Theron became intrigued with the idea of Rooibos tea for infants. Her discoveries and years of research are shared in her book, "Allergies:  An Amazing Discovery."

Rooibos tea for babies... What are the risks?

Not only is Rooibos tea a popular beverage in South Africa for adults, children, and babies, but, in the region's traditional medicine, Rooibos is used to ease infant colic and for various other health troubles. While much has still to be learned about Rooibos, current research hasn't yet discovered any significant risks in drinking Rooibos tea.

Even so, it's essential to check with your healthcare professional first if you are thinking of adding Rooibos to your baby's diet. If you are pregnant or a nursing mom, it's best to consult your healthcare provider before adding Rooibos to your own diet, as well.
