Green tea helps to prevent oxidative stress and quash the potential health concerns and diseases that oxidative stress can cause.
A study in 2012 in Lubbock, Texas, considered green tea's effect on oxidative damage, with a special focus on bone health. Over 170 postmenopausal women with osteopenia participated in this research.
'Osteopenia' refers to lower-than-normal BMD (bone mineral density), which increases the chance of osteoporosis.
This six-month study found that enjoying green tea regularly (about 4 cups daily) significantly reduces oxidative stress, which can lead to improved bone health and protection against osteoporosis.
The effects of regular Tai Chi exercise were also considered in this study. (Tai Chi is a low- to moderate-intensity exercise for health of body and mind that originated in ancient China.)
Tai Chi alone or in combination with green tea was also found to lessen oxidative stress and potentially improve bone health.
The benefits of drinking green tea aren't only related to our physical health - green tea can benefit mental health, as well.
In a review of studies targeting the effectiveness of green tea in supporting mental health, green tea was shown to prevent age- and injury-related cognitive decline and reduce the risk of Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and other neurodegenerative diseases.
Green tea's polyphenols (which are powerful antioxidants) are attributed for this brew's ability to protect us against cognitive deterioration and neurodegenerative diseases, but researchers believe there may be more to discover yet about the reasons why this tea provides so much support for cognitive health.
Drinking green tea regularly may reduce the effects of cigarette smoke on your lungs.
In a 2010 Taiwanese study at Chung Shan Medical University in Taichung involving 170 lung cancer patients and 340 healthy participants, the lifestyle, smoking history, diet, and family history of each participant was assessed.
Research results found that enjoying at least one cup of green tea each day can significantly reduce the risk of lung cancer for both non-smokers and smokers. For non-smokers, the risk is 5 times less, and for smokers, the risk reduction is 13-fold.
Genes can also play a part in a predisposition towards lung cancer. This study found that green tea drinkers with certain genotypes gain even more protection (up to 66% more) against lung cancer.
Researchers attributed green tea's ability to protect against lung cancer to its polyphenols, which are potent antioxidants - but they also cautioned that the best protection against lung cancer is to stop smoking altogether.
